Thailand Legislature Legalizes Medical Marijuana and Kratom

Cannabis, which is also known as marijuana, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant which is used for medical and recreational purposes. But there are some properties of marijuana which labels it as a drug. The most important component of marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol which is one of the 483 known compounds present in the plant.

Marijuana can be smoked or vaped and also be used in food. There are multiple physical and mental effects of it and it gives the users a usual “over the moon” effect which is also known as the stoned effect. Marijuana causes people to have a blurred vision, increased appetite and impaired body movement.

Marijuana is an illegal drug in most of the countries because of its overuse and tendency of addiction in people. It is perceived to have “a high potential for abuse.” There are also a lot of historically racist associations with marijuana leading to its ban. It also has a link to heavy narcotics like heroin and overuse can be extremely harmful to the body and mind.

On the other hand, Kratom, is a medicinal herb that originates mainly from Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Kratom contains curing and therapeutic properties which helps in healing bodily problems such as cough, diarrhea and also improve situations of patients that are diabetic or have heart diseases. Kratom has been in use since the nineteenth century and its leaves are directly chewed after being plucked, dried with the veins removed.

There are a few major components including mitragynine and 7hydroxymitragynine along with 25 known alkaloids in AuthenticKratom which boost up the immune system as well as providing other benefits.

Kratom has been controversial since it has not been declared as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because of insufficient evidences to prove its addiction in people, but the government of Thailand has declared the opposite. Kratom was illegal to use in Thailand because of its continuous abuse and the same goes for marijuana.

In 2018 Thailand’s legislature in Bangkok agreed upon the country’s drug law to legalize kratom, which is locally grown and used as a stimulant and painkiller, and also legalizing marijuana. Thailand is one of the few countries in the world and the first country of Southeast Asia and also the origin of Kratom, to legalize the medical use of both of these medicinal herbs. This also influenced Malaysia to consider if it should lift the ban on the use of Kratom around the country since it was widely used before the ban.

Thai legislation passed its final reading at the National Legislative Assembly by a vote of 166-0 with 13 abstentions.

Producers and researchers need a license to deal with marijuana and kratom and the people who need to buy kratom for any purpose, need a prescription. This is to ensure that the herbs aren’t misused and abused again.

Recreational use of these herbs will still be penalized and result in rebels ending up in prison with other charges.

There are a lot of researches that show that marijuana has medicinal benefits and many times it is used in medicines to cure people which is why after taking certain medicines, people felt sluggish, sleepy, overwhelmed or extremely hungry.

Many people are using marijuana directly as medicines in Thailand to treat their diseases despite the government’s orders. Same goes for kratom, which is used by the locals to treat conditions and illnesses where they believe that kratom is a much effective alternative to medicine and provides extra effects like alertness, increased focus, enhanced motivation, extra energy and good thoughts.
